Australian juniors on top in Europe
Thursday, July 3, 2008

At about 3:30 this morning our time Michael Matthews from Canberra won the Prologue at a 5 day Junior Tour in Italy.

Michael riding for the Australian Junior Team upset the European favourites by taking the Prologue from fellow Australian and team mate Michael Freiburg. The Australian Team is riding this Tour in preparation for the Junior World Championships to be held in Cape Town South Africa in Mid July.

What was particularly awesome was that Michael rode the prologue on his road bike. Having been told he would not be riding the ITT at Junior Worlds Michael was told to leave his Cervelo P3 specialist Time Trial bike back home in Australia.

Click here for Stage results. With Australians 1st and 2nd after the Prologue you can be assured the Australian National Team will have to do a lot of work to do to keep an Australian in yellow.

Congratulations to Michael and the team. Michael trains over the same terrain that the Canberra Junior Tour will be traversing this weekend. The photo below shows Canberra rider Alastair Loutit in action in Europe where he finished 29th in the Prologue of Tre Ciclistica Internazionale Bresciana (Ita).

Women's B Grade included in Open Women's Race
Tuesday, June 10, 2008

In response to a number of requests race organisers have decided to include a Women's B Grade in the 2008 Tour. Women's B will race with the Open and Under 19 Women's race but will have their own category, be awarded separate results within the category and will race for prize money and a winner's jersey. There will be no Queen of the Mountain competition for this grade. Provided sufficient entries are received prize money will be set at the same level as the JW17 category.

Open or Under 19 Women who wish to enter the B Grade race should email race organisers advising of this preference at time of entry.  By default entries received will be treated as entering the Open and Under 19 Women's grade unless contrary advice is received. Riders entering Women's B Grade are ineligible to receive Open and Under 19 Women prize money regardless of their finishing position in a stage or race.

Tour to be raced over closed roads
Thursday, June 5, 2008

In a major development designed to enhance the safety of participants in the Kowalski Tour the 2008 tour will be raced over roads closed to traffic, local and emergency traffic will still have access. This means a major change to the courses normally used for the event with racing now concentrated on Uriarra Rd between, Cotter Rd and Brindabella Rd (Uriarra Homestead), and Coppins Crossing Rd. Speed limits over these roads have also been reduced for local traffic to 60 kph from 100kph. See the Stages & Results section of the website for detail of the new courses.

Australian Junior Women's World Championship Team to ride Kowalski
Friday, May 23, 2008

The road team to represent Australia at the Junior World Championships in Cape Town South Africa has recently been selected. The team leaves Australia to join the Track team on 10 July and to round off their preparation they will compete in the Kowalski tour the weekend before they leave.

The members of the Australian team who will be competing in the Kowalski Tour are Lauren Kitchen NSW, Sophie Ootes SA, Zoe Appel QLD and Chloe Hosking ACT.

With a strong NZ contingent present and the traditionally strong Women's field that is attracted to the Kowalski Tour it should be a perfect springboard for the Aussie assault on the World Championships.
